Other features that have come to distinguish the long-running fighting series have also been translated to this third-person combat adventure, such as environmental hazards like acid pits, deadly spikes, and powerful "Multality," "Brutality," and "Fatality" attack moves that can only be performed with precise input in certain conditions. The game engine is designed to allow characters to attack and defend themselves from enemies in any direction - ahead, behind, or on either side.įor better or worse, monks will encounter other memorable characters from the Mortal Kombat series, including Sub-Zero, Scorpion, and Goro. As either of two of the series' Shaolin monks, Liu Kang or Kung Lao, players will make their way through the various realms of the extra-dimensional fighting competition from a third-person perspective. Inspired in part by the action-RPG-styled "Konquest" segments of 2004's Deception, Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks is a full-fledged fighting adventure that leads players in a violent, epic struggle through the storied Mortal Kombat universe. The drawback on the PS2 is - no surprise here - lackluster visual performance. Midway has released Shaolin Monks for the PS2 and Xbox, with each console having one notable advantage over the other and one drawback. At least most of the sound effects are tight, with lots of bashing and snapping sounds. If only Raiden didn't talk so much! It was bad enough when he was Christopher Lambert, but now whew. It would also offset the mediocre cutscenes and voice acting, both of which slow the pace of the game dramatically. If ever there was a time for a downloadable patch, this is it: being able to add a second player on the fly would add an extra half-star to the rating.
With so much content limited to the co-op game - which does make it a great experience if you've got a Kombat-loving friend - a lot of nifty stuff is orphaned in the solo game. If you want to play co-op, the game has to begin and end that way. Midway has, for some reason, left out the ability to jump in with a second character at any time. As fun as MK combat may be for two players, there is one glaring flaw in Shaolin Monks.
